Atvars LakstigalaWith a brilliant debut in January 2010, Atvars Lakstigala started his work as orchestra’s chief conductor. In September 2010, he also became the art director of the orchestra.

Atvars Lakstigala studied at Latvian Music Academy and graduated from it as a French horn player (prof.Arvids Klisans), brass band conductor (prof.Janis Purins) and symphony orchestra conductor (prof.Imants Resnis). He has also attended many musical workshops with Vasilij Sanaisky, Leonid Green, Neeme Jervi and Paavo Jervi to stimulate his professional growth. In 2011 he earned master’s degree at the Berlin University of Arts (Universitaet der Kuenste Berlin) by Dr. Lutz Koehler.

From 1997 till 2010 Atvars Lakstigala has worked as a professional French horn player, playing chamber music and performing as a soloist, also playing with Latvian and foreign professional junior symphony orchestras. He has worked with the Latvian National Opera for a long time; he was an assistant concert master of the Latvian National Opera from 2001 till 2010.

His debut as a conductor with the Liepaja Symphony Amber Sound Orchestra took place in March of 2008. After a regular cooperation with the orchestra, he has become the chief conductor and later also the artistic director of the orchestra.

On April 16th of 2009 he conducted opera by Giuseppe Verdi – Traviata. After this successful debut at the Latvian National Opera, he is now going to conduct many more operas such as Traviata, Masquarade balland Macbeth by Giuseppe Verdi in the season of 2010/11, and Trittico by Giacomo Puccini, as well asEugene Onegin by Peter Tchaikovsky. He will also be conducting some ballets – The Sleeping Beauty by Peter Tchaikovsky and The Lady of Camellias with music by Franz Liszt.

During the period 2005 to 2009 Atvars Lakstigala regularly conducted concerts of Latvian Music Academy Symphony Orchestra during his bachelor’s program in conducting studies. As a conductor, Atvars Lakstigala has cooperated with the Professional Brass Band Riga. On November 18th of 2009, within the framework of studies at Berlin Arts University, he had a successful debut as a conductor of Berliner Symphoniker. At the 90th anniversary celebration of the Latvian National Opera, Atvars Lakstigala had the honor of conducting the final of the great concert, substituting maestro Mariss Jansons, who was affected by illness.

Atvars Lakstigala is a laureate of many international contests. He has been the 1st award winner at both the International Brass Competition (Poland 2000) and Andrejs Jurjans’ International ContestPusamintrumenti (2001). He has also been rewarded with the Latvian Culture Ministry Appreciations and the biggest music award in Latvia - the Great Music Award 2010 for the performance in Liepaja Symphony Amber Sound Orchestra.
