Seungmin KangRecent fifth prize winner of the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia, Cellist Seung-Min Kang is a vibrant and established soloist, who has performed numerously throughout the world. A cellist of impeccable technique and versatile musicality, Ms. Kang loves her career as a soloist, recitalist, and as chamber musician.
An active soloist, Ms. Kang has given numerous concerts and recitals internationally. Ms. Kang began concertizing since age eleven, appearing as a soloist for the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then, she has performed with Seoul Chamber Orchestra, Suwon Philharmonic, Incheon Philharmonic, Chamgwon Philharmonic, Gwacheon Philharmonic, Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra, Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, Monte Carlo Philharmonic, St. Christoper Festival Orchestra, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Ms. Kang also has given multiple recital tours in Japan throughout her career.
Top prize winner of many renowned competitions, Ms. Kang was awarded the first prize at the First Gaspar Cassado International Cello Competition in 2006, first prize at the Johansen International Competition in 2003, the second prize at the Young Tchaikovsky Competition in 2002, and a special prize at the 2009 Rostropovich Cello Competition in Paris. In Korea, she was the first prize winner of the top three competitions in the county; Dong-A Newspaper(2004), Ewha-Kyunghyang (2002), and Korea Times(2001) competitions.
This season, Ms. Kang has performed a solo recital and as a duo partner to her mentor, David Geringas at the Usedom festival, and also had the privilege to perform at the German parliament. For the remainder of the season, Ms. Kang will be performing at the Great Mountains Festival in Korea and at the Evmelia Festival in Greece.
Born in Seoul, Korea, Seung-Min began her cello studies at the age of eight. After graduating from Yewon Arts Middle School, she was granted a special admission to the Bachelor's degree at the Korea National University of Arts at age fifteen as part of the school's prodigy program. In 2007, Ms. Kang moved to Berlin, Germany and continued her studies with Prof. David Geringas and Prof. Troels Svane at the Hochshule fur Musik Hanns Eisler. After receiving her master's degree, she is currently pursuing her konzertexamen course at the institution.
